The Importance of HEPA Filtration

The Importance of HEPA Filtration

Since most Americans spend the majority of their time indoors, going from home to work or school, inside their vehicles, they are exposed regularly to air that is up to five times more polluted than the air outside. Given this information, indoor air quality is of great concern in homes, as well as businesses, restaurants, schools, and more.

One of the most effective methods of improving air quality inside is the use of HEPA filtration. HEPA or High-efficiency particulate air filters are pleated air filters designed to remove contaminants from the air. Theoretically, HEPA filters remove 99.97 percent of particles measuring 0.3 microns, including airborne contaminants like mold, bacteria, viruses, pollen, and dust.

HEPA filters are high performance, enhancing air quality in homes for family and friends, in businesses for customers, employees, and visitors, and in schools for students, teachers, and faculty, just to name a few. In addition, this improved air quality means not only enhanced health benefits but can also help businesses meet air quality standards as well as earn LEED certification.

HEPA Filters Explained

High-efficiency particulate air filters are, as mentioned are filters, most often made from pleated paper material, used to remove particles from the air. HEPA filters became popular in the 1950s. Today’s HEPA filters are required by the U.S. Department of Energy to meet stringent guidelines including the removal of 99.97 percent of particles measured at 0.3 microns or larger. This includes but is not limited to dust mites, bacteria, mold spores, ash, dust, smoke, smog, pet dander, and viruses.

HEPA filters are designed with fiberglass fibers, created to trap air particles and contaminants in three unique ways: diffusion, interception, and impaction. When particles smaller than 0.1 microns collide with gas molecules, they can be trapped by HEPA filters more easily in a process known as diffusion. Interception describes particles which are blocked by the fiberglass HEPA filter and thus intercepted. Larger particles are captured via impaction when they are unable to navigate the filter materials.

The Advantages of HEPA Filtration

HEPA filtration systems offer a number of advantages in homes, businesses, restaurants, schools, churches, construction sites, and manufacturing facilities. Here are some examples of the benefits of HEPA filtration.

  • Health Benefits – Because HEPA filters remove particles and contaminants from the air, cleaner air results. For family members, friends, customers, employees, and others visiting your home, business, or organization can experience relief from allergy and other respiratory symptoms when HEPA filtration systems are in place.
  • Air Quality Standards – Businesses and other organizations are often required by national, state, or local authorities to meet certain air quality standards. HEPA filtration can help ensuring the amount of dust and debris being produced due to manufacturing or construction is properly controlled.
  • LEED Certification – HEPA filtration systems can help your business or organization attain or maintain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification (green building certification recognized globally).
